Your City Hall just dropped 28 new permits. What's next?

Your City Hall is pushing permits, eh?

Alright Calgary, let's talk about what's happening down at City Hall, because it feels like they're trying to get some projects moving, for real though. Our Civic Intelligence Monitor, which keeps tabs on this stuff in real-time as of 11:31 AM on April 11, 2026, shows that 28 new commercial and construction permits were issued in Calgary this week. That's a decent push, especially when you think about the usual spring slowdowns we sometimes hit.

It seems the Calgary Planning Commission has been busy too, pushing through recommendations for Council. On March 12, 2026, votes from Nathan Hawryluk, Thom Mahler, Charles Boechler, Katherine Wagner, and Chris Hardwicke all carried motions related to reports CPC2026-0209 and CPC2026-0143. These reports, while pretty dry on paper, are about getting plans through the system. It means some developments are getting the green light to move from the drawing board to actual construction, which is a good sign for jobs and the economy. This is Calgary — we've seen the boom, we've seen the bust, and we showed up anyway.

* 28 commercial/new construction permits issued this week, according to the Civic Intelligence Monitor.

* Calgary Planning Commission members voted to carry motions on reports CPC2026-0209 and CPC2026-0143 on March 12, 2026.

* These permits are the groundwork for future buildings, impacting local jobs and services.

What this means for us folks driving down Deerfoot or walking along the Bow River pathway is that you'll likely see more cranes on the skyline. Keep an eye on where these new developments are actually landing. Are they going to fill in some of those empty storefronts on Stephen Avenue, or are they pushing out into the newer suburbs? That's what we'll be watching.
