Your City Hall is Building New Things
Howdy, Calgary. Cassidy Redcloud here, coming at you live from the Morning Wire. For real though, we’ve got some interesting numbers bubbling up from City Hall this week, and it looks like our town is still in a building mood, despite what some folks might tell you.
Our civic intelligence monitor, which keeps tabs on all the permits and whatnot, shows that 24 commercial and new construction permits have been issued in Calgary this week. That's a solid count, folks. It means there’s active development happening right now, not just talk around a table down at the Palomino. This isn't just theory, it's actual shovels in the ground eventually. We've seen the boom, we've seen the bust, and we're showing up anyway, building new stuff.
Now, while we're on the topic of building, the Calgary Planning Commission has been busy. On March 12, 2026, they carried multiple motions, recommending Council give three readings to several reports, including CPC2026-0209 and CPC2026-0143. Commissioners like Nathan Hawryluk, Thom Mahler, Charles Boechler, Katherine Wagner, and Chris Hardwicke all voted "Yes" on these. This stuff often flies under the radar, but these votes pave the way for future developments that will literally change the skyline and shape our neighbourhoods.
What does this mean for you? It means the city isn't just idling. Keep an eye on those construction sites popping up around town, because these permits are the genesis of those projects.
