Your Councillors are Racking Up Convention Expenses
Good morning, Edmonton. Darren Fedoruk here, trying to locate the sun through what I can only assume is another fine layer of spring dust. Or maybe it's just my windows. It’s hard to tell this time of year.
City Hall news this morning revolves around what your elected officials are spending to represent us. Or, you know, to attend conventions. According to the latest council expense reports, Councillors Clarke and Elliott are both ringing up some notable tabs for the 2025 Alberta Municipalities Convention in Calgary, scheduled for November 12-14, 2025. Councillor Clarke’s expenses include $825.88 for accommodation and an additional $685.00 for registration. Councillor Elliott also lists $825.88 for accommodation and $348.00 for food and incidentals. These are not insignificant amounts, even if they are for a convention nearly a year and a half out.
Meanwhile, the Agenda Review Committee met on May 26, 2026, with Councillors Knack, Stevenson, and Wright present. They unanimously adopted the agenda and approved the minutes from their May 12, 2026, meeting. They also voted to meet in private for one item, citing section 29 of the *Access to Information Act* for "advice from officials." Standard procedure, but it always makes you wonder what advice is being given that requires such discretion. Honestly though, these are the little gears turning that keep the big machine of the city moving, even if it feels like watching paint dry. Edmonton doesn't need your approval. Never did.
