Kelowna just spent $4.8M on an overpass. Is it worth it?

Okay, I have to tell you what just happened at City Hall

Good morning from the Okanagan — the lake is calm, the vines are growing, and we have things to discuss.

City Hall just quietly made a move that’s going to impact how you get around our beautiful city, especially if you love hitting the Mission Creek Greenway or getting to the farmers' market. Yesterday, the City Council, with a 6-1 vote, approved the preliminary design for the new pedestrian and cycling overpass that will connect the Dilworth Centre with the Mission Creek Greenway. Councillor Charlie Mako was the lone vote against, citing concerns about the $4.8 million price tag.

Here's the thing nobody talks about: This project has been in the works for years, aimed at improving safety for folks trying to cross the busy Springfield Road.

* **Project Name:** Mission Creek Greenway Pedestrian/Cycling Overpass

* **Location:** Over Springfield Road, connecting Dilworth Centre to Mission Creek Greenway

* **Cost Approved:** $4.8 million for preliminary design and land acquisition

* **Vote Count:** 6-1 in favour (Councillor Mako opposed)

* **Goal:** Enhance safety and accessibility for pedestrians and cyclists

The next step is securing the necessary land agreements and detailed engineering, which means we'll likely see shovels in the ground sometime next year. This is a big one, folks, for anyone who uses our trails or just wants to move around Kelowna more easily. It means safer routes to those incredible Saturday morning finds at the Dilworth farmers' market.

I'm Nina Papadimitriou, and that's your Morning Wire from Kelowna.

My cousin Niko and the whole crew are talking about this on the show right now — you can catch it live at mornings.live.
