Your city hall just approved a huge new development
Good morning from the Okanagan — the lake is calm, the vines are growing, and we have things to discuss.
Okay, but here's the thing nobody talks about at City Hall: what gets approved and what gets denied actually changes how we live. And yesterday, the big news is that Kelowna City Council approved a massive new residential tower at 1450 Bertram Street by a 7-2 vote. This is going to be a 46-story building, which, let's be honest, is a pretty significant addition to our skyline, right downtown, just a few blocks off Bernard Avenue. It's a mixed-use project with both market housing and rentals.
* **Project Location:** 1450 Bertram Street
* **Height:** 46 stories
* **Council Vote:** 7-2 in favour
* **Use:** Mixed-use, residential
* **Impact:** Adds significant density downtown
The developer, Mission Group, has been pushing for this one for a while. The big discussion point for council was, as always, density and how it fits into the downtown core. The argument for it is clear: we need more housing, full stop. The argument against, from the two dissenting votes, was about infrastructure strain and preserving some of Kelowna's unique feel. This approval, according to the official City of Kelowna meeting minutes, is a clear signal that the city is betting big on vertical growth downtown.
What this means for you? Expect more people walking around Bernard, more traffic on the William R. Bennett Bridge, and potentially more pressure on our already busy City Park Beach in the summers. It's a huge shift for our city. We’ll be watching closely to see how the Mission Group project progresses and what other high-rises are in the pipeline.
