Someone just dropped $2M on a home in Ward 1.

Your city is really putting up some walls… and taking them down

Bonjour, Ottawa. Simone Okafor-Bouchard here, with your Morning Wire from the MiTL Sports Desk, covering what's happening just off the Hill – where the real decisions are made, n’est-ce pas? Today we're diving into some recent building permits and development applications that show us where our city is growing. The real story is never on the Hill — it's always just off it.

### Big Money, Big Builds

We’ve seen some significant activity on the building permit front. Take a look at the commercial sector, where 4701 Tahoe Blvd in Ward 3 just got approved for interior alterations on its second and sixth floors. The permit, BP 3ALT 26-804, is valued at a hefty $568,320. That’s a considerable investment, telling us businesses are still looking to modernize and expand within the city.

Meanwhile, a new two-storey detached dwelling in Ward 1, specifically 865 Aviation Rd, is going up with a finished basement and walkout. Permit BP 9NEW 24-5505 shows a construction value of $2,066,986. Almost 2.1 million dollars for one home – that’s the kind of residential investment that impacts our housing market, reflecting a demand for high-end properties even as we talk about affordability.

Here’s a quick snapshot of what else caught my eye:

* **Tim Hortons Update:** Even our beloved Tim Hortons at 780 Bancroft Dr in Ward 11 is getting a refresh with permit BP 3ALT 26-430, focusing on recladding its drive-thru window for $84,619.

* **Industrial Growth:** Ward 5 will see interior alterations and a new fire alarm system for landlord work at 5900 Keaton Cres, a project valued at $1,556,164 under permit BP 3ALT 26-444. Industrial spaces are key for our economy, keeping jobs local.

### What’s Next for Our Neighbourhoods?

On the development application side, things are moving forward, though still "in process." Application OZ/OPA 25 23 for a residential apartment building at 1970 and 1980 Fowler Drive in Ward 8 is one to watch. More apartments mean more housing options, which is always a hot topic in Ottawa. And over in Ward 11, App SP 25 67 is proposing a new townhouse development at 376, 390 Derry Rd W, and 0 Oaktree Circle. These are the kinds of projects that shape the daily lives of residents, influencing everything from traffic to local school enrolment.

These numbers, straight from our City Hall’s permit and application data, give us a window into where Ottawa is growing and changing. Keep an eye on these developments; they’ll shape the face of our city for years to come.
