Your Kids Can Finally Learn Algebra Again

Okay so, big news from the San Francisco Unified School District. The school board just voted to bring back 8th-grade algebra. Yeah, you heard that right – after a *12-year* hiatus. My nephew, who's in middle school, was hella confused when I told him. He was like, "They didn't have algebra?" Nope, fam. For over a decade, kids in the City were waiting until high school for it.

### What's Changing

This move, announced late last night, March 26, is a pretty significant shift. The idea back in the day was to make things more equitable, but it ended up hurting students who were ready for advanced math. Now, kids who are prepared can take algebra in 8th grade, which is how it was for generations. It means our public school students can get a jumpstart on those STEM pathways, which feels like a no-brainer if you ask me.

This decision means SFUSD is finally listening to parents and educators who've been pushing for this. It's a small step, but it's a step toward making sure our kids can compete. What's next is seeing how they implement this and if it actually helps close those achievement gaps, not widen them.

That's the City, fam — fog, hills, and all.
