Your RentSafeTO just got an upgrade. But what's the catch?

Two alarm calls this morning, what's going on fam?

Okay but real talk—it's 7:30 AM on April 26, 2026, and Toronto Fire Services is already dealing with two active alarm single sources across the city. The first alarm was dispatched at 7:15:29 AM, with another following quickly at 7:26:17 AM. We don't have the exact locations just yet, but the fact that both are "alarm single source" incidents means crews are likely on scene investigating specific alerts rather than full-blown fires. Still, it's a reminder to stay vigilant, fam. Always know your exits, especially if you're in a big building like those towers near Scarborough Town Centre.

### What's Happening at City Hall

Meanwhile, at City Hall, the Planning and Housing Committee has been busy. On April 14, 2026, they passed the RentSafeTO Update with a 4-0 vote. Councillors Gord Perks and Frances Nunziata both voted Yes on this. This is huge for renters, myself included, because it's supposed to hold landlords accountable for maintenance and repairs.

They also carried an Official Plan Amendment Application for 105-109 Vanderhoof Avenue and 10 Brentcliffe Road, again with a 4-0 vote.

* **RentSafeTO Update:** Carried 4-0 on April 14, 2026. Councillors Gord Perks and Frances Nunziata voted Yes.

* **Vanderhoof/Brentcliffe Application:** Carried 4-0 on April 14, 2026. Councillors Gord Perks, Frances Nunziata, and Jamaal Myers all voted Yes.

This Vanderhoof/Brentcliffe one, it’s about development, dude. It always is. Given how housing prices are going, every permit and every appeal report shapes what our neighbourhoods are going to look like. Speaking of permits, a new building permit was issued on January 16, 2026, for 2-56 Cather, which is for a single-family townhouse development. Applied for back on December 8, 2025, according to city records.

This stuff matters because it's literally building the Toronto we're living in, brick by brick, condo by condo. Keep an eye on the Two-Spirit, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer Advisory Committee meetings coming up on May 13 and July 7, 2026, for what else is brewing at City Hall.

Real talk, this is Toronto — stay up.
