Your City Hall is changing the West End again
There's a quiet hum through the city, even when it's raining – the sound of things shifting, building. And sometimes, you see the visible evidence of it in the city's permitting records. On March 24th, a building permit, BP-2024-02610, was issued for a new 27-storey mixed-use tower at 1300 Robson Street, with a valuation of $141,600,000. That’s a significant investment, even for Vancouver.
This isn't just a paper exercise. This permit, according to the City's records, means a major transformation for a stretch of Robson that many of us know well. It’s part of a broader push we’ve seen, where older, sometimes smaller buildings, give way to density. And it follows a council vote on March 12th, where Mayor Sim, along with Councillors Klassen, Meiszner, Zhou, and Bligh, all voted in favour of the CD-1 Rezoning for 2028-2038 Barclay Street — just a stone's throw away. It’s a pattern.

This concentration of development in the West End tells us something about where the city sees its growth happening. Beautiful out here. Complicated in here. That's the coast. It’s worth watching how this new tower integrates into the neighbourhood, and what it means for the businesses and residents already there.
