Your Council just changed Canada Place. What's next for the waterfront?

Your City Hall just decided a big one for Canada Place

Good morning. You know, on a clear day, the way the light hits the sails of Canada Place, it just reminds you why we put up with everything else. But beautiful out here. Complicated in here. That's the coast.

Turns out, City Hall was busy last week. On April 14th, your City Council held a public hearing and voted on a significant text amendment for 1055-1085 Canada Place and 1001-1045 West Waterfront Road. This kind of amendment can change how a property can be used or developed, which is a big deal for such a prominent location. Councillors L Dominato, P Fry, M Klassen, and B Montague all voted in favour, with R Bligh recorded as absent. The decision was carried, so the changes are moving forward.

It's interesting timing, too. Just three days later, on April 17th, a permit (BP-2026-00478) was issued for a temporary structure at 1055 Canada Place – specifically, a 44' x 84' special event tent, valued at $300,000. It makes you wonder about the connection, doesn't it? What's planned for that space, and how does it fit into the broader vision for our waterfront?

* **Location:** 1055-1085 Canada Place and 1001-1045 West Waterfront Road

* **Vote Date:** April 14, 2026

* **Outcome:** Text Amendment Carried

* **Key Councillors:** L Dominato, P Fry, M Klassen, B Montague (In Favour); R Bligh (Absent)

* **Related Permit:** BP-2026-00478 for a $300,000 temporary structure at 1055 Canada Place, issued April 17, 2026.

This kind of quick follow-up, a public hearing immediately preceding a permit for a major installation, suggests things are moving quickly down at the waterfront. Keep an eye on what kind of "special event" is coming to Canada Place; it might give us a glimpse into the future of that iconic part of the city.
