Your City Hall just approved a new short-term rental

We had a Special Council meeting on April 21st, and it was a short one. The big takeaway was a unanimous vote to approve a business license application for a new short-term rental at 1801-1788 Columbia Street. Councillors B. Montague, L. Zhou, and S. Orr all voted in favour. Councillor R. Bligh was absent, but the decision still carried unanimously among those present.

This isn't a huge surprise, given the ongoing discussions around housing in Vancouver. Short-term rentals are always a complicated topic here. On one hand, they offer flexibility for visitors and income for property owners. On the other, they can reduce the availability of long-term housing in a city already grappling with affordability. It's a balance City Hall is constantly trying to strike, especially in areas like False Creek, which is a mix of residential and more transient spaces.

### New Buildings and Old Favorites

On the development front, we saw a few interesting building permits issued on April 24th. There's a new three-storey, four-unit multiplex coming to 4008 Dunbar Street, with a permit value of over $1.8 million. It's listed as "High Density Housing / Commercial." And over on 1903 W 4th Avenue, near where Naam has been a Kitsilano fixture for decades, there are interior alterations for an existing restaurant, valued at $85,000. It's always good to see those neighbourhood institutions getting some love.

These multiplexes are part of the city's push to diversify housing options, trying to fit more people into existing neighbourhoods without resorting to massive towers everywhere. It’s a delicate dance, trying to add density while keeping the character of places like Dunbar. What we'll need to watch is how many of these new units actually become accessible, long-term housing for people who want to put down roots here.
