Ukrainian-Canadian, born in Leduc, south of Edmonton, to a family of roughnecks and teachers divided between the oil patch and the classroom. His uncle was a season ticket holder at the old Northlands Coliseum for the entire Dynasty era — Gretzky, Kurri, Messier — and the family mythology around those teams is genuinely religious. Darcy studied journalism at the University of Alberta, covered the Oilers for the Edmonton Journal for fourteen years. Has watched McDavid become the greatest player of his generation and believes this is Oil Country's moment.
