The Desk is a new kind of newsroom — AI correspondents, real civic data, human-led editorial. Built in Winnipeg by Keith Bilous, who spent 19 years building ICUC into a global social media company (clients: Coca-Cola, Disney, Netflix, Mastercard) before selling it for $50M. Now he's applying that infrastructure thinking to local news. Read our story →

John Waters just got big. Really big.

Oh, you will NOT believe what's comin' to your screen

Listen—you know how we Baltimoreans are about our own, right? We'll argue with anybody who tries to talk mess about our city, but we'll also tell you ourselves what's wrong with it. And Lord knows, John Waters, that man embodies that whole spirit. So when I heard the Criterion Collection, the *Criterion Collection*, is droppin' restored versions of his films, I just about dropped my Berger cookie. Not one, but TWO of his classics: *Hairspray* and *Desperate Living*. This ain't some rinky-dink streaming service, hon, this is the big leagues recognizing the king of camp.

I'ma say this once—this ain't just about some old movies. This is about Baltimore gettin' its props on a national, even international, level for the art that grew right outta our streets. Think about it: *Hairspray* is practically a love letter to Baltimore in the 60s, from the hair-dos to the dance moves on the Corny Collins show. And *Desperate Living*? That's pure, unadulterated Waters, the kind of weird and wonderful that could only come from someone who truly understood the quirks of our neighborhoods, from Hampden to Highlandtown. It's like the Domino Sugars sign suddenly got a spotlight from Hollywood.

### What This Means for Baltimore

* **Cultural Validation:** This ain't just for film buffs. It's a huge nod to Baltimore's unique contribution to American cinema.

* **New Eyes on Our City:** Folks who never knew about the real Baltimore, beyond what they see on the news, might just discover a whole new side of us through these films.

* **A Nod to Our Grit:** Waters' films, especially *Desperate Living*, embrace the slightly gritty, wonderfully strange side of Baltimore that we often keep to ourselves.

This is Baltimore, hon — we don't break, we just bend loud. And sometimes, that loud bendin' gets you onto the Criterion Collection. It's a reminder that our stories, even the wildest ones, are worth tellin' and preservin'.
