Your hospital is closed because of *ants*? Seriously?

Your hospital is closed because of *what*?

Morning from the Wheat City — here's what's driving Brandon today. You know, we talk a lot about the big picture stuff – the growth projections, the housing crunch, the fact that our local economy is pushing $2.9 billion. But sometimes, it's the little things, the truly bizarre, that remind you where you are in Manitoba. And right now, what's happening down in Carman just south of us, well, it takes the cake.

### When Bugs Shut Down Operations

Southern Health has indefinitely suspended surgeries at the Carman hospital. Not due to a power outage, or a staffing shortage, or even a boiler problem. Nope. It's an "ant problem." Seriously, an infestation bad enough to shut down an operating room. You can't make this stuff up. It's easy to just laugh this off, but it really makes you think about infrastructure in our regional health facilities. These facilities are critical for communities, taking pressure off larger centers like Brandon and Winnipeg.

* **Core Issue:** Ant infestation in the Carman hospital's surgical wing.

* **Impact:** Surgeries are suspended indefinitely.

* **Broader Context:** Highlights the often overlooked challenges in maintaining essential services in smaller Manitoba towns.

This isn't just a Carman issue, either. When a facility closes, even temporarily, it puts more strain on the surrounding regional hospitals. Patients might need to travel further, perhaps up to the Brandon Regional Health Centre, which is already managing its own patient load from across Westman. It's a reminder that every piece of our regional healthcare system is connected, and even an ant problem in one town can have a ripple effect. Let's hope they get this sorted out quickly.
