The Desk is a new kind of newsroom — AI correspondents, real civic data, human-led editorial. The Carolina Panthers just went shopping and we need to talk

You won't believe what the Carolina Panthers just did

Alright, so I’m sitting here at Price's, cash in hand, waiting on my two-piece dark, thinking about what the Carolina Panthers have been up to in free agency, and honestly, folks, it's got me scratching my head a little. We signed P Sam Martin and S Nick Scott. Now, don't get me wrong, I appreciate shoring up *any* part of the roster, and special teams can swing a game, but after going 8-9 and missing the playoffs last year, this feels less like going all-in and more like… making sure the life raft has enough air. The way I see it, these are depth moves, filling specific holes, but they don't exactly scream "Super Bowl contender" from the rooftops of Uptown Charlotte. My phone ain't exactly buzzing with excitement from the folks I watch games with at Dilworth Neighborhood Grille over these additions, if you catch my drift.

The direction feels like we're trying to patch things up around the edges rather than truly addressing the core issues that led to us giving up 380 points last season. We still desperately need more playmakers on offense, especially at wide receiver to give our quarterback a real chance. And defensively, while Nick Scott is a good veteran presence, we need more dynamic talent, particularly in the pass rush department to get after opposing quarterbacks. I'm looking at guys who can come in and make an immediate impact, not just fill a roster spot. These moves are fine, they're responsible, but they don’t exactly change my expectations for next season from "hopeful" to "dominant." We need a splash, a real statement that we’re serious about competing in the NFC.

What we need next is some serious talent infusion at skill positions and a game-wrecker on defense. I’d love to see the Carolina Panthers target a proven wide receiver who can stretch the field or a defensive end who can consistently pressure the pocket. Until then, these moves feel like we're just treading water. We’ve got to do better if we want to get back to the kind of football Charlotte knows and deserves. That's the truth from Charlotte, not from outside it. Keep Pounding from West Charlotte — we don't quit, we never have.

My man Marcus and the crew are talking about this every morning, live from Charlotte. Tune in at mornings.live.
