Riding Mountain is on fire, but it's a good thing.

Your park is literally on fire to save it

Good morning from the Parkland — here's what matters in Dauphin today.

You know, sometimes you hear something and you gotta do a double-take. Like, "Wait, what?" That's how I felt when I heard about what's going on up at Riding Mountain National Park. They're setting fires, on purpose, to save the grasslands. It sounds completely backward, doesn't it? But Melanie Robinson, the fire management officer up there, says it's absolutely essential. They're doing these "prescribed burns" to cut down on bigger, uncontrolled wildfires later, and to protect some really delicate endangered grasslands that need a good burn now and then to thrive.

### Why It Matters to Us

Now, for folks living right here in Dauphin, and especially those of us who spend a lot of time out near Clear Lake or along Highway 10, this isn't just some abstract park management thing. It's about protecting one of our biggest draws and a huge part of our local identity. We love Riding Mountain, whether we're camping, hiking, or just driving through enjoying the scenery.

* **Wildfire Prevention:** These controlled burns help create fire breaks, meaning less chance of a massive, out-of-control blaze threatening the park or even creeping closer to our homes and farms.

* **Ecosystem Health:** Those grasslands aren't just pretty; they're vital habitats for all sorts of animals and plants. Burning off old growth actually helps new, healthier vegetation sprout up.

* **Long-Term Vision:** It’s a bit like farming, really. Sometimes you do something counterintuitive in the short term for a healthier harvest down the line. It's about managing our natural resources responsibly, ensuring Riding Mountain stays beautiful and vibrant for generations, and that's something everyone from Main Street Dauphin to the farthest canola field can appreciate.

It’s a reminder that sometimes the best way to protect something is to understand its natural cycles, even if that means a little smoke in the air for a good cause.
