Your Oilers just broke my heart again

Honestly though, it feels like the universe has a very particular sense of humour when it comes to the Edmonton Oilers. After two straight years of getting right to the Stanley Cup Final, you'd think we'd built up some kind of karmic buffer. You'd think. Instead, here we are, watching the hockey world react to us getting ousted in the *first round* by the Anaheim Ducks. It’s the kind of thing that makes you want to just stare out at the High Level Bridge, watch the train go by, and contemplate the nature of human suffering.

### The Inevitable Post-Mortem

What happened? Well, the reports are pretty clear. Inconsistency, a lack of urgency, gaps in intensity. Sounds about right, doesn't it? It’s the same old tune we’ve heard played on the ice at Rogers Place more times than I care to count. It's like reading *Sisyphus* for the thousandth time and still hoping he’ll get the rock over the hill this time. He never does. And neither did our boys this year.

* **Deficient Defence:** The numbers don't lie. Our defensive play was, to put it mildly, not up to snuff.

* **Inconsistent Effort:** Some nights they looked like world-beaters; others, like they'd just rolled out of bed on Whyte Avenue after a particularly long Fringe Festival night.

* **The Weight of Expectation:** After those deep runs, the city was electric. You could feel it from Mill Woods to St. Albert. Maybe that weight was just too much.

Edmonton doesn't need your approval. Never did. But we do need our Oilers to play like they mean it, especially when the stakes are this high. This isn't just about hockey; it's about the collective emotional well-being of a city that lives and breathes orange and blue. This is a cold morning in Edmonton, and not just because of the weather.

The guys on the show will have a lot more to say about this tomorrow — catch them live at mornings.live.
