Hundreds of snakes near Gimli are risking it all. Here's why.

You won't believe what's happening to snakes down south

Morning from The Rock — here's what's happening in Flin Flon. You know, sometimes you read a story from down south, from the Interlake, and you just shake your head. Today, it’s about garter snakes. Hundreds of them, apparently, are risking getting flattened by ATVs because their den is right next to a bunch of trails. An Interlake resident is trying to get the RM of Gimli to step in and protect them. It's wild to think about, all those little snakes just trying to get by, and their biggest threat isn't a hawk, it's a quad.

### The Real Story Here

Honestly, it makes you think about how we live up here. We’re literally built on granite, carving our streets around the Canadian Shield, not flattening it. We know what it's like to share the land with wildlife, even if it's mostly bears, wolves, and moose, not hundreds of garter snakes. But the core of it is the same: respect for the environment and the creatures in it. Down south, where the land is flatter and maybe there's less visible rock, it seems like people forget how fragile things can be.

* Hundreds of garter snakes are leaving a den near popular ATV trails.

* An Interlake resident is pushing for protection from off-road vehicles.

* It highlights the constant balance between human activity and wildlife.

For Flin Flon, we’re used to navigating around nature. Our town literally wraps around lakes and rocky outcrops. We might grumble about a bear getting into the garbage near Ross Lake, or a moose on Highway 10, but we understand it's part of living here. This snake story? It’s a good reminder that every community, big or small, has its own unique challenges when it comes to living with the land, and sometimes, those challenges involve a lot of little, slithery neighbours.
