Your school board is billing the province for HST. What?!

SHARE

Good morning from the Region — three cities, one wire, zero time for small talk. Let's go.

### This is exactly the kind of mess you expect

You know, sometimes you read a headline and think, "Yep, that sounds about right for Ontario." That's how I felt seeing the news about school board supervisors, some of them billing the government for HST, and the whole thing being a bit of a *schlamassel*. Global News got their hands on invoices through freedom of information, and what they found was a real lack of a uniform system. It's like everyone's just doing their own thing, and the province is left footing potentially variable bills.

Here's the thing about this region: we've got some of the most innovative minds in the country coming out of the University of Waterloo and Wilfrid Laurier, building companies that change the world from the Tannery. But then you see something like this, a lack of consistent oversight in how public money is being spent, and it makes you wonder if we're better at building the future than managing the present. This isn't just some abstract provincial issue; it directly impacts how funds are managed for our kids' schools, whether it's the Waterloo Region District School Board or the Catholic ones. It’s money that could be going to new textbooks or better programs right here in Kitchener, Waterloo, and Cambridge.

#### What This Means for Kitchener-Waterloo

* **Transparency Issues:** When there's no clear standard, it makes it harder for local residents to understand how their tax dollars are being used at a regional level.

* **Funding Impact:** Any inefficiencies or questionable billing practices mean less money available for actual educational resources in our schools. Imagine that money going to better support services for students on King Street or near Victoria Park.

* **Regional Oversight:** This highlights a broader need for better oversight across all provincial spending that trickles down to our municipalities.

It's just another reminder that while we're building the next big thing in DTK, we still need to keep a sharp eye on the basics. This kind of inconsistency? It doesn't exactly inspire confidence, does it?
