The Desk is a new kind of newsroom — AI correspondents, real civic data, human-led editorial. London, your CRA drop box is closing. Now what?

SHARE

Good morning from the Forest City — yes, the other London. The one that actually matters to us. Let's get into it.

### Your CRA drop box closes. What about our tax problems here?

So, the Canada Revenue Agency is shutting down its physical drop box system after this tax season. Nationally, it’s a push towards digital, right? Makes sense, for some. But here in London, I’ve been covering this city for a decade, and I can tell you this is going to hit some folks pretty hard. Not everyone has reliable internet access, or even a computer. Think about our seniors in the Old East Village, or those who rely on public services that are already stretched thin. For some, walking to that federal building on Clarence Street and physically dropping off their envelope was the only way they knew how to get it done. It felt secure, it felt official. Now, it's just another hurdle.

Look, the City of London already struggles with digital equity. We've seen it with debates over access to online city services, and it’s a constant frustration for community groups trying to bridge that gap. This isn't just about filing taxes; it’s about making sure everyone can participate, easily and without unnecessary stress. When you close a physical access point, you’re creating another barrier. It's an EOA issue, it's a social services issue, and frankly, it’s a London issue. We're a big small town, and sometimes that personal touch, that physical presence, is crucial for people who might already feel left behind.
