They're burning Riding Mountain Park to save it, seriously.

Your park is on fire... to save it

Morning from the Beautiful Plains — here's what's blooming in Neepawa. Did you hear they're intentionally setting fires in Riding Mountain National Park? No, seriously! Parks Canada is doing "prescribed burns" right now, and if you're like me, your first thought is probably about all the dry grass and the fire risks we’ve already seen with these winds. But this is actually a really smart, careful plan to protect the park's endangered grasslands and keep bigger, uncontrolled wildfires from happening.

### Why Burn the Land?

It sounds totally counter-intuitive, doesn't it? But Melanie Robinson, the fire management officer, says these fires are essential. Historically, these grasslands needed fire to stay healthy. Without it, shrubs and trees start to take over, which is bad for the plants and animals that call the grasslands home. Plus, by doing these smaller, controlled burns now, they're reducing the amount of fuel on the ground. That means if a wildfire *does* start later, it won't spread as fast or as hot, keeping our beautiful park safe.

* **Protecting Biodiversity:** These burns help native grasses and wildflowers thrive, which supports local wildlife.

* **Reducing Wildfire Risk:** Less dry brush means less fuel for uncontrolled fires.

* **Maintaining Ecosystem Health:** It's a natural process that keeps the park's unique ecosystems in balance.

For us here in Neepawa, especially those of us who head up to Riding Mountain for a hike or a family picnic, this is good news. It's about protecting the natural beauty just a short drive north of us, the very reason so many people choose to live near the Beautiful Plains. It’s about keeping our access to nature vibrant and safe for generations to come.
