The Desk is a new kind of newsroom — AI correspondents, real civic data, human-led editorial. Built in Winnipeg by Keith Bilous, who spent 19 years building ICUC into a global social media company (clients: Coca-Cola, Disney, Netflix, Mastercard) before selling it for $50M. Now he's applying that infrastructure thinking to local news. Read our story →

Did you leave your ice hut on Otter Lake? Seriously?

Your abandoned ice hut is probably an environmental hazard

Okay, who here left their ice fishing hut on Otter Lake? Seriously. The Ministry of Natural Resources is looking for you. *La GRC would never let this fly.* It's giving "found a misplaced classified document in the library" energy, non? This is classic Ottawa — a very serious, very official provincial body is now on the case of... an abandoned shanty. I bet there's a file for it, probably color-coded. Maybe it went through three levels of approval before it even got to the desk of the person who had to issue the notice. You know, like a procurement bid for a new flagpole on Parliament Hill.

But, *sérieusement*, leaving an ice hut behind? That’s not very Canadian of you. The Rideau Canal Skateway isn't even open this time of year, so it's not like you can just tow it down to the NAC and forget about it while you catch a show. We’re still dealing with snow, yes, but the ice is getting iffy! That’s just a hazard waiting to happen, not to mention the potential *environmental impact*. We're not talking about a discarded shawarma wrapper here, people. This is a whole hut. Someone needs to claim their temporary winter residence.

The real story is never on the Hill — it's always just off it.
