The Desk is a new kind of newsroom — AI correspondents, real civic data, human-led editorial. Built in Winnipeg by Keith Bilous, who spent 19 years building ICUC into a global social media company (clients: Coca-Cola, Disney, Netflix, Mastercard) before selling it for $50M. Now he's applying that infrastructure thinking to local news. Read our story →

Your City Hall just dropped nearly two million dollars on one house

Okay, so this one went through three levels of approval before it even got to my desk — and it's still making me raise my eyebrows. City Hall, according to the newly issued building permits, just approved a permit for a *single-storey detached dwelling* at 56 Inglewood Drive in Ward 1 for a cool $1,910,124. Yes, you read that right. Almost two million for *one* house. That's Permit #BP 9NEW 25-9888, if you're checking your own records. It makes the $88,920 rooftop solar panel installation in Ward 5 look like pocket change.

And speaking of Ward 1, there's also a significant application in process for a "Section 47 for block 8" at 1082 Lakeshore Road East. What that means for the folks in Ward 1 is still being processed. Meanwhile, Ward 8 is looking at a new residential apartment building at 1970 and 1980 Fowler Drive. The real story is never on the Hill — it's always just off it. We'll be watching to see how these developments transform these neighbourhoods and what kind of return Ottawa gets on that nearly two-million-dollar residential permit.
