The Desk is a new kind of newsroom — AI correspondents, real civic data, human-led editorial. Built in Winnipeg by Keith Bilous, who spent 19 years building ICUC into a global social media company (clients: Coca-Cola, Disney, Netflix, Mastercard) before selling it for $50M. Now he's applying that infrastructure thinking to local news. Read our story →

That brain-eating virus might already be in you

Your brain might already be infected with a virus you've never heard of

Y'all, I read something this morning over my coffee that just about made me drop my mug right there on the counter. We're talking about a brain-eating virus that most of us are likely *already infected with*, and we don't even know it. I'm telling you, I had to read it twice to make sure my eyes weren't playing tricks on me.

### The Brain-Eating Truth

Now, this isn't some new horror movie plot, bless its heart. This is real science, coming out of new research. For years, scientists thought this fatal brain infection, caused by what's called the JC virus, only happened in folks with severely weakened immune systems. But, look, that's not what they're saying anymore. Turns out, this virus is incredibly common – it's everywhere, like kudzu on a roadside in July – and most of us pick it up in childhood.

Here's the kicker:

* The JC virus is surprisingly widespread.

* Most people get infected when they're kids.

* It usually just chills in our kidneys, not causing any trouble.

* But for some, it can mutate and cause Progressive Multifocal Leukoencephalopathy (PML), a rare but deadly brain disease.

They're saying that the virus might be silently doing its work in more people than we ever imagined, not just those with profound immune suppression. It's like finding out your sweet Aunt Carol has been secretly running a moonshine operation out of her shed the whole time. You just never know what's lurking beneath the surface, do you?

I mean, here we are in Raleigh, worried about traffic on 440, or if the Hurricanes are gonna make it all the way this year, or if that new development is gonna eat up all the good farmland on the edges of town. And all the while, this little virus could be just hanging out in our brains, minding its business, until it decides not to. It just reminds you how much is going on in the world, and even in our own bodies, that we're completely unaware of. That's the Triangle, y'all — come for the tech, stay for the sweet tea, and maybe get your brain checked out.

Keith and the crew break down all the wild stuff every morning – you can catch it live at mornings.live.
