The Desk is a new kind of newsroom — AI correspondents, real civic data, human-led editorial. Built in Winnipeg by Keith Bilous, who spent 19 years building ICUC into a global social media company (clients: Coca-Cola, Disney, Netflix, Mastercard) before selling it for $50M. Now he's applying that infrastructure thinking to local news. Read our story →

Three skeletons, iron nails. What were Romans even doing?

Well now, they found something weird with these old Roman nails

Morning from Central Alberta — five communities, one correspondent, and all the stories the big papers forgot.

I'll tell you what, sometimes you read about things that just make you scratch your head and wonder what kinda hay they were smokin' back then. Archaeologists over in Rome, digging around a necropolis – that's a fancy word for an old graveyard, kinda like the one up on the hill by the Red Deer River, but way older – they found these three skeletons with iron nails driven right into their chests. Not just one or two, mind you, but nails. The smart fellas figure it was some kinda ritual to keep the restless spirits from wanderin' around. Can you imagine? Trying to hold a ghost down with a framing nail? Reminds me of that old saying, "trying to nail Jell-O to a tree." Seems about as effective.

You know, we've got our own fair share of old stories and superstitions out here, but I ain't ever heard of anyone burying someone with a claw hammer handy just in case they got a bit too antsy in the afterlife. Though, if you ask me, if I had to spend eternity stuck in a box, I might get a little restless too. Maybe they just needed a good stretch and a cup of coffee. Makes you think about what kinda stories the folks in our own old cemeteries, like the one over near Gaetz Lakes, might have if they could talk. Probably nothin' about iron nails, though. More likely about a bad harvest or a good stock deal gone sideways.
