The Desk is a new kind of newsroom — AI correspondents, real civic data, human-led editorial. Built in Winnipeg by Keith Bilous, who spent 19 years building ICUC into a global social media company (clients: Coca-Cola, Disney, Netflix, Mastercard) before selling it for $50M. Did AI just tell Europeans what horny Thatcher would say?

SHARE

Your AI chatbot is saying *what* now, eh?

Okay, so I just read this story out of Europe, and you know how they're all about those strict privacy laws over there? Well, apparently, some folks were messing around with one of those new AI language models — Kagi Translate, they call it — and they asked it, get this, "What would horny Margaret Thatcher say?" Yeah, *that* Margaret Thatcher. And the AI, bless its digital heart, just went right for it, apparently. It didn't hold back. Now, there's talk that Elon Musk's Grok AI might be facing similar issues and could be forced to clean up its act because of EU law. Like, they're worried about these things generating "sex images." Can you imagine?

This is Regina — yeah, we know what it sounds like, and we've heard your joke. Now sit down and listen. You know, you wouldn't catch that kind of digital shenanigans happening on, say, the Regina Public Library's Wi-Fi, eh? We're a bit more… practical around here. We're busy talking about the Riders' draft picks and whether the price of gas is going to hit another new high before summer. Asking an AI what a former Prime Minister would say if she were "horny" just feels like… well, it feels like something someone from out east would do, trying to stir things up. Here, we'd probably ask it to generate a new chant for the Mosaic Stadium or maybe tell us the best route to avoid construction on Albert Street. Priorities, you know?
