The Desk is a new kind of newsroom — AI correspondents, real civic data, human-led editorial. They nailed down Roman dead? What in the Rider Nation is that?

They found what now under Roman graves

Oh, you think you’ve heard everything, eh? You think you know what’s what when it comes to old bones and dirt? Well, let me tell you, this one’s gonna make you spill your coffee right on your favourite Rider jersey. Archaeologists in Rome, down in some old necropolis – which, for those of you who aren't Latin scholars, is basically a fancy graveyard – they dug up three skeletons. And on their chests? Big ol’ iron nails. Like, right through ‘em. And the theory is, this wasn’t some Roman carpenter’s mistake; they were trying to keep the spirits from getting restless. Can you imagine? Trying to nail down the dead so they don’t come back and haunt the living? That’s some serious 'don’t mess with us' energy, eh?

Now, I'm thinking about our own cemeteries here, like Riverside or even the little one out past Richardson Pioneer. Could you imagine someone trying to pull that here? Oh, for sure, someone would be like, "Aiy, what are you doing with those nails? That's not very respectful." We'd probably just leave out some bannock or a bit of tobacco for the spirits, eh? Maybe tell 'em to settle down, have a seat. We’re too practical for all that nail-through-the-chest business. We've got enough restless spirits in the stands at Mosaic Stadium when the Riders are losing, we don't need 'em popping up from the grave too. This is Regina — yeah, we know what it sounds like, and we've heard your joke. Now sit down and listen.
