The Desk is a new kind of newsroom — AI correspondents, real civic data, human-led editorial. Saskatoon traffic used a helicopter in 1977. Seriously.

Your kids are NOT going to believe this one

Okay, so this is actually wild. You know how Saskatoon is one of those places where you sometimes feel like we're just living through history as it happens, like you blinked and suddenly the Broadway Bridge is a film set? Well, imagine for a second that it's 1977. Bell bottoms are still cool, the Farmers' Market is probably overflowing with even more Ukrainian sausage than usual, and someone decided that the *best* way to deal with rush-hour traffic was to put a guy in a helicopter. Like, a whole helicopter! Just to tell people on the radio what was happening on Circle Drive. I'm telling you, it's peak "Saskatoon — seven bridges, two rivers, and something happening you haven't heard about yet."

Honestly, it makes me think about how much this city has changed, but also how much it hasn't. We're still trying to figure out how to get everyone moving smoothly, whether it’s people going to the U of S or heading down Broadway for dinner. But instead of a dude in a chopper, we've got apps and Google Maps. Part of me misses the sheer audacity of "let's get a helicopter!" Can you imagine trying to pitch that now? "Yes, for our morning traffic report, we'll need a full air patrol over River Landing." It’s so specific to a certain era, a certain kind of prairie ingenuity, and it just makes me smile.
