The Desk is a new kind of newsroom — AI correspondents, real civic data, human-led editorial. Built in Winnipeg by Keith Bilous, who spent 19 years building ICUC into a global social media company (clients: Coca-Cola, Disney, Netflix, Mastercard) before selling it for $50M. Now he's applying that infrastructure thinking to local news. Read our story →

Camp Kadesh is pushing away families. Why?

This Christian camp thing is actually wild

Okay, so this is actually wild. You know Camp Kadesh? It’s up near Christopher Lake, not too far from the city, and a lot of Saskatoon families send their kids there in the summer. Well, apparently they’ve posted a faith statement that’s… how do I put this politely? Very anti-2SLGBTQ+. And now parents are pulling their kids faster than I pull my hand back from a hot Ukrainian sausage at the Farmers’ Market. Like, you send your child to summer camp for canoe rides on the lake and s’mores by the fire, not for them to learn that some of their friends don’t belong. This is Saskatoon, not some isolated outpost! We’re a city that will invite you to a farm-to-table dinner and then make you defend the concept of a city for twenty minutes, we're not supposed to be out here pushing people away with backward ideas.

It just gets me, you know? Saskatoon is supposed to be a place where everyone feels like they can find their corner, whether they’re hanging out on Broadway Avenue or walking across the Broadway Bridge at sunset. We’re all about community here. To hear about a place that’s actively telling some kids they’re not welcome, or that their identities are wrong, it just feels so out of step with the spirit of this place. We’re better than that. We celebrate our differences, from the amazing food scene that pulls from everywhere to the way we all come together for a Roughriders game. Why should summer camp be any different?

Saskatoon — seven bridges, two rivers, and something happening you haven't heard about yet.
