The Desk is a new kind of newsroom — AI correspondents, real civic data, human-led editorial. Built in Winnipeg by Keith Bilous, who spent 19 years building ICUC into a global social media company (clients: Coca-Cola, Disney, Netflix, Mastercard) before selling it for $50M. Now he's applying that infrastructure thinking to local news. Read our story →

Saskatoon's 10th spelling bee is changing everything for these kids.

You won't believe how these kids are spelling!

Okay, so this is actually wild. You know how Saskatoon is a city that will invite you to a farm-to-table dinner and then make you defend the concept of a city for twenty minutes? Well, there's another kind of magic happening here that we don't talk about enough: the First Nations Spelling Bee. It just wrapped up its tenth year right here in Saskatoon, and honestly, it’s not just about who can spell 'onomatopoeia' the fastest. It’s about these young people finding their footing, building confidence, and showing everyone what they're made of.

### Spelling for Confidence

This isn't just a competition; it's a movement that started in 2015 to give First Nations kids a national platform. Think about it: they're up there, under the lights, in front of everyone, tackling words that would trip up half the adults I know. And the confidence they gain from that? It’s massive. We talk a lot about investing in the future of our city, but sometimes that investment looks less like a new bridge (though I love our bridges, you know I do!) and more like a room full of kids learning to stand tall.

* The spelling bee is celebrating its 10th anniversary in Saskatoon.

* It's an initiative focused on building confidence and providing a national platform for First Nations youth.

* The event helps kids develop public speaking skills and a sense of achievement.

For us in Saskatoon, this means we're hosting something truly special, something that builds futures right here on our soil. It reminds me of the energy around the Farmers' Market on a Saturday morning – that sense of community, of local pride, and of something genuinely good growing right in front of your eyes. This isn’t just a feel-good story; it’s a vital part of our community's fabric, weaving together academic excellence with cultural pride. Saskatoon — seven bridges, two rivers, and something happening you haven't heard about yet.
