Your kid's water gun game could land them in trouble
Morning from the Interlake — here's what's happening in Selkirk today.
You know, sometimes the line between a bit of fun and something serious gets blurry, especially when you're a kid. We've been hearing stories out of Ontario about high school students playing this "Senior Assassin" game, basically a city-wide water gun fight, but it's gotten to the point where police are stepping in. There was even an incident where an unhoused man was accidentally sprayed, which, you can imagine, isn't right. It's a reminder that even innocent games can have unintended consequences, especially when they're played in public spaces like Selkirk Park or down by the Marine Museum.
### Thinking About Our Streets
It makes you think about our own kids, doesn't it? Selkirk is a tight-knit place, and we pride ourselves on looking out for each other. But as the city grows, and with more traffic coming up from Winnipeg along Main Street and Manitoba Avenue, what might seem like a harmless prank could easily be mistaken for something more serious. We've got a lot of kids who work part-time jobs, maybe walking home late from the grocery stores or the restaurants on Easton Drive. You wouldn't want someone getting the wrong idea.
* **Safety First:** Police are worried about people mistaking water guns for real weapons.
* **Public Perception:** What looks like fun to a student can look like a threat to a bystander.
* **Our Community:** Selkirk has a strong community, and these games can create unease.
It's about respecting our public spaces and the people who share them, whether you're down by the Red River waiting for the pickerel run or just walking through your neighbourhood near the Mental Health Centre. We need to make sure our young folks understand the impact their actions can have, even when they're just trying to have a good time. Selkirk isn't a playground for games that might scare folks.
