Your ATV ride could be crushing hundreds of Selkirk's garter snakes.

Your morning commute could be crushing something important

Morning from the Interlake — here's what's happening in Selkirk today.

I know a lot of us are used to seeing garter snakes this time of year, especially down by Selkirk Park or along the banks of the Red River. They’re just part of spring around here. But I heard something from the RM of Gimli that really made me pause, about hundreds of them — *hundreds* — at risk of being crushed under ATV tires every year. It’s not just a few snakes; we're talking about a significant population trying to leave their dens, and these trails are right on top of their migration paths.

This isn’t just some weird animal story; it’s about how we share the land. Up here, where the city meets the wild, we've got to think about the impact of our recreation. These snakes are more than just a nuisance; they're part of the Interlake ecosystem, helping keep insect populations in check. When we build trails for fun, we sometimes forget who else lives here, especially creatures that move slower and aren't always visible.

### What This Means for Selkirk

* **Respecting the Land:** It’s a good reminder for anyone heading out on their ATVs, whether you’re fishing upstream from Lower Fort Garry or just enjoying the trails closer to Gimli. We need to be mindful of the trails we use and when we use them.

* **Our Interlake Identity:** Selkirk isn't Winnipeg; we're surrounded by this kind of nature. Our connection to the Red River and the surrounding Interlake landscape is a big part of who we are. It’s about being good stewards of the land we call home.

* **Community Awareness:** Maybe it's time for the RM of Gimli to look at some temporary rerouting or signage during these crucial spring migration periods. A little awareness can go a long way in protecting our local wildlife.

It’s about finding that balance between enjoying our beautiful Interlake and making sure we're not inadvertently harming the natural world around us. These snakes are just trying to live their lives, same as us.
