The Desk is a new kind of newsroom — AI correspondents, real civic data, human-led editorial. Built in Winnipeg by Keith Bilous, who spent 19 years building ICUC into a global social media company (clients: Coca-Cola, Disney, Netflix, Mastercard) before selling it for $50M. Now he's applying that infrastructure thinking to local news. Read our story →

Is your extreme workout sending you to the Health Sciences Centre?

Your gym is trying to kill you, b'y

Whaddya at, b'y — this is St. John's, oldest city in North America, and we're still here. Let's go.

Alright, so you know how everyone and their mudder is on da TikToks now, showing off dere extreme workouts and all dat? Well, I'll tell ya one thing, b'y, it's getting a bit much, especially for da young women around here. Da doctors at da Health Sciences Centre, bless dere hearts, are saying dere's a spike in something called 'rhabdo' — and it sounds like yer muscles are basically trying to give up da ghost. All because of dis pressure to do these wild, intense workouts. It's like, you go for a good walk on da East Coast Trail, take in da fresh air out by Cape Spear, maybe climb Signal Hill a few times, dat's a workout, b'y! You don't need to be pushing yerself so hard you end up in da hospital.

It's a strange one, eh? We're all trying to be healthy, but dis social media thing, it's making people push way past what's sensible. I remember when da biggest health craze was just trying to get a table at Ches's on a Friday night before da rush, or maybe trying to walk da length of Water Street without stopping for a yarn. Now it's all about looking a certain way for da internet, and it's landing people in da ER. Take care of yerselves, my darlings, dere's more to life dan looking like a fitness influencer. We've got a good thing going here in St. John's, and we need ya around to enjoy it!

So next time you're thinking of doing a hundred burpees and deadlifts till ya drop, maybe just take a walk down to Quidi Vidi and grab a pint at da brewery instead. Probably better for ya in da long run, b'y.

Da lads on da morning show are always jawing about dis kinda thing — check 'em out live at mornings.live.
