Your land is protected forever

Morning from the Automobile City — here's what's growing in Steinbach.

You know, sometimes the stories that really stick with you aren't about the big numbers or the new developments, but about the quiet dedication of our neighbours. And this one? It's all about keeping a promise to family and to the land. A couple from southeastern Manitoba is stepping up to donate a significant chunk of peatland, making sure it stays pristine, just as their late uncle wanted. This isn't just any land; peatlands are crucial for our ecosystem, soaking up carbon and providing unique habitats. Their uncle stewarded this land with care, and now his legacy of conservation will live on, right here in our backyard.

### Why This Matters for Us

It’s easy to get caught up in the pace of growth along Highway 12, with new dealerships and businesses popping up. But this act reminds us of the deeper roots in our community. This family's decision reflects a value I see all over Steinbach – a respect for what was here before us and a desire to preserve it for what's to come. It’s about more than just acreage; it’s about heritage and responsibility.

* **Environmental Impact:** Peatlands are vital carbon sinks and home to unique flora and fauna. Protecting them directly benefits the regional environment.

* **Legacy Honoured:** This donation ensures a relative's lifelong commitment to the land is permanently recognized and upheld.

* **Community Values:** It highlights a strong local ethic of stewardship that often goes unheralded amidst rapid development.

It's a beautiful example of how our Mennonite heritage of caring for the earth continues to shape our actions, even as we expand. This kind of thoughtful conservation ensures that as Steinbach grows, we're also mindful of the natural resources that define southeast Manitoba. It's a reminder that not everything needs to be developed; some things are best left exactly as they are.
