Half of Canadians back Churchill. Do you?

Your support for Churchill is really important up here

Morning from the Gateway — here's what's moving in The Pas.

You know, for all the talk about northern development, it's something else entirely to see the numbers laid out. A new survey suggests just over half of Canadians actually support the expansion of the Port of Churchill. But here's the kicker: a lot of folks down south, even in our own province, still aren't all that familiar with it. This isn't just about a port; it’s about the whole supply chain that runs through communities like ours.

It's easy for people in Winnipeg or further south to forget just how vital that northern connection is. When we talk about the Port of Churchill, we're talking about the railway that snakes through The Pas, carrying goods and grain. We’re talking about jobs right here, from folks working at Tolko moving lumber that might eventually go through that port, to the truckers and railway workers who keep everything flowing. It’s all connected, like the Saskatchewan River to Cedar Lake.

Here's why this matters to us:

* **Economic Backbone:** The port’s vitality directly impacts the traffic and the economy along the Kelsey Trail and up the Flin Flon Highway.

* **National Awareness:** The fact that more than half of Canadians support it, even if some don't know much about it, shows a glimmer of understanding that the North isn't just an empty space.

* **Infrastructure Investment:** Support for Churchill often translates to broader calls for northern infrastructure, which could benefit our roads and connectivity here in The Pas and Opaskwayak Cree Nation.

For us, the Port of Churchill isn’t just a dot on a map; it’s part of the lifelines that sustain the North. Seeing national support, even if it’s a slight majority, is a reminder that our gateway role resonates beyond the banks of the Carrot River. It’s about more than just ships; it’s about a vision for the North that includes us.
