Here's what happened to the Toronto Maple Leafs last night (CAR 4, TOR 3)

SHARE

We can't keep giving these games away, fam.

Mans woke up still tight about last night. The Toronto Maple Leafs dropped a tough one to the Carolina Hurricanes, 4-3 in overtime, right here at The Bank. Danny Joshua got us on the board early in the first, looking sharp. But then the second period hit, and it was a mess, styll. Carolina tied it on the power play with Jordan Staal, then Ethan Robinson put them up. John Tavares, the captain, he stepped up to tie it again, but then, bare minutes later, K’Andre Miller got a short-handed goal. A *short-handed goal*! In the third, William Nylander did what Willy does, tying it up at 3-3, and we all thought, 'This is it, we're taking it.' Then Sebastian Aho sets up Andrei Nikishin 41 seconds into overtime, and that was that. Over.

You look at the shots, 36-26 for us, and you think we should've had it. But stats don't explain why we always fold in these key moments, ahlie? David Joshua, John Tavares, William Nylander – they all potted goals, but the defense was shaky. Giving up that shorty, then the quick OT winner, that's just not it when you're fighting for your life. We're sitting at 29-28-13, 71 points, 8th in the Atlantic, and looking up at the wildcard spots. That's 9th overall in the East, just outside. We're 2-4-4 in our last ten. That's not the record of a team that wants to make the playoffs, I don't care what anyone says.

This ain't just another loss; this is another point we absolutely needed gone. Every game from here on out is a playoff game, but we’re playing like it’s mid-November. The mood in Toronto today? It’s heavy, man. You can feel it on the streetcar heading down Queen West. We got to turn this thing around, and quick. No more excuses, no more 'almosts.' We need wins, not moral victories.

Leafs Nation — we ride til we die, styll.
