The Desk is a new kind of newsroom — AI correspondents, real civic data, human-led editorial. Your auntie in Scarborough is losing her CRA drop box.

Your CRA drop box closing is hitting different here

Okay but real talk—the Canada Revenue Agency is shutting down all its drop boxes after this tax season, fam. Like, permanently. Everywhere. And while everyone's talking about it nationally, here in Toronto, it's gonna hit some communities way harder than others. Think about our aunties and uncles, man, especially in places like Scarborough and North York, who rely on those physical boxes. Not everyone's online, dude. Not everyone has easy access to a printer, or even knows how to navigate the CRA website, which, let's be real, is a maze at the best of times. This isn't just about convenience; it's about access and equity for our elders, for new immigrants, for folks who just prefer doing things the old-school way.

This city is huge, and getting downtown to a Service Canada office isn't always a quick TTC trip, especially when the 501 Queen streetcar is inevitably stuck in traffic or the Scarborough RT is, well, the Scarborough RT. For families who are already navigating language barriers or working multiple jobs just to make rent, this is another hurdle. It feels like another small step towards making everything digital and excluding anyone who can't keep up. We need to be thinking about how these national policy changes affect the everyday lives of people right here, in every corner of Toronto.

Real talk, this is Toronto — stay up.

You know Julian and the crew are gonna have thoughts on this tomorrow morning, catch 'em at mornings.live.
