They screamed like gulls in Beacon Hill Park. Here's why.

You'll never guess what they did in Beacon Hill Park

Good morning from the island — we're still here, the orcas were spotted at Active Pass, and honestly, life is fine. Well, here's the thing: while the mainland is fretting about liquor laws and SkyTrain upgrades, we had a proper, shall we say, *spirited* event right here in Beacon Hill Park. Did you know there was a "Scream like a Gull" contest? Yes, you read that right. The Rocky Point Bird Observatory hosted its second annual competition, bringing over a hundred people to our cherished park to learn about bird migration and conservation. It's truly a uniquely Victoria thing, isn't it? Not a protest, not a debate, just people, birds, and a bit of a squawk.

### Why Does This Even Happen?

It might seem a bit whimsical, but there's a serious side to it, too. The event was all about World Migratory Bird Day. It reminds us that while we're enjoying the serenity of James Bay, or watching the float planes land in the Inner Harbour, there's a whole world of creatures sharing our space. And honestly, what better way to connect with that than to try and sound like a local? I often walk through Beacon Hill Park, past the petting zoo and the totem poles, and you hear the gulls. They have a certain… conviction to their calls. This event is just a celebration of that raw, unadorned island sound.

* **Community Connection:** It brought over 100 people together, right here in the park, for a shared, somewhat unusual experience.

* **Environmental Awareness:** The core message was about bird migration and conservation, which is always important on an island surrounded by such diverse ecosystems.

* **Unique Victoria Vibe:** It perfectly captures that post-urgency energy I always talk about – focusing on joy and connection rather than the constant rush.

For those of us who live here, who appreciate the deer wandering unafraid through our gardens and the ocean breeze, it’s a gentle reminder of what makes Victoria, well, Victoria. It's not quaint; it's just delightfully itself.
