You won't believe how many permits Calgary just approved
Alright, alright, settle down folks. Cassidy Redcloud here, your Morning Wire correspondent for Calgary, and we're digging into what's cookin' at City Hall. For real though, this city’s still building, despite what some folks down south might think.
This week, the Civic Intelligence Monitor data, live as of 11:52 AM on May 16, 2026, shows that Calgary issued **32 commercial and new construction permits**. That's a lot of shovels in the ground. It tells you something about the direction we're headed, especially when you look at the Calgary Planning Commission’s recent votes. On March 12, 2026, the Commission, with members like Nathan Hawryluk, Thom Mahler, Charles Boechler, Katherine Wagner, and Chris Hardwicke all voting 'Yes', approved several key reports, including CPC2026-0209 and CPC2026-0143. These votes recommend Council give three readings to whatever development proposals they’re tied to.
It means more high-rises, more businesses, more density coming to a neighbourhood near you. This is Calgary — we've seen the boom, we've seen the bust, and we showed up anyway.
What does this all mean for us? Well, those permits and council approvals pave the way for a changing skyline and new opportunities. We’ll be watching to see where these projects actually break ground and what impact they have on our infrastructure.
