Your rent's going up, and City Hall just voted 4-0 on it.

Your Rent is Going Up But At Least We Talked About It

Okay but real talk—the Planning and Housing Committee had some intense discussions on April 14, 2026. What’s wild, fam, is that they unanimously carried two big items, 4-0. Councillors Gord Perks, Frances Nunziata, and Jamaal Myers all voted yes on the RentSafeTO Update. This program is supposed to make sure landlords are keeping up their buildings, right? Making sure your apartment isn't falling apart.

But here’s the thing: everyone knows rent is wild in Toronto, like, *ellam enna aachu*? So, while they're updating safety, the bigger picture is still this crushing housing crisis. They also voted yes on an Official Plan Amendment Application for 105-109 Vanderhoof Avenue and 10 Brentcliffe Road. This kind of stuff shapes our neighbourhoods, what gets built, what changes. It means more development is coming, for better or worse. We're always trying to figure out how to grow without losing the soul of the city, you know? What does this mean for affordability? Only time will tell, but these votes set the stage.

Real talk, this is Toronto — stay up.

Psst, the squad on the Morning Wire dives deep into this stuff every day — peep it live at mornings.live.
