Your Council Just Approved a New Dunbar Multiplex
Beautiful out here. Complicated in here. That's the coast. And Vancouver City Hall keeps adding new layers to the complicated part.
On April 24th, a significant building permit was issued for 4008 Dunbar Street. This permit, BP-2025-04209, greenlights the construction of a new three-storey, four-unit multiple dwelling—what we often call a multiplex—valued at just over $1.86 million. This is a substantial project for Dunbar, a neighbourhood traditionally known for its single-family homes. Seeing this kind of density increase in an established area is something many residents are watching closely.
Meanwhile, last week, on April 21st, the Special Council voted unanimously to approve a business license application for a short-term rental at 1801-1788 Columbia Street. Councillors B. Montague, L. Zhou, and S. Orr all voted in favour. Councillor R. Bligh was absent, but the decision still carried without opposition. This signals a continued, careful approach to short-term rentals, allowing them in specific contexts. It's a tricky balance for the city, trying to manage a tourism economy without further impacting our already tight housing market.
These decisions, according to the City's recent building permit and council vote records, show the ongoing push and pull between development, housing needs, and neighborhood character here in Vancouver. It’ll be interesting to see how the Dunbar project integrates into the streetscape, and if more multiplexes follow.
