You need to know about the fires in Meadowood and Silver Heights, hey.
Good morning, Winterpeg. We built a city in the coldest place anyone has any business building a city — and it is genuinely wonderful. Good morning.
We’re starting with some important news this morning that just came in through the real-time civic intelligence monitor. The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to two structure fires overnight, one in Meadowood and another in Silver Heights.
### Overnight Fire Activity
According to our real-time monitor data from 2026-05-24 at 12:01:45 UTC, WFPS crews were busy.
* A structure fire (incident 2026078783) was reported in the Meadowood neighborhood, in the St. Vital ward, at 5:47 AM today, May 24, 2026. Units D3, E26, E27, L13, and R9 were on scene, and the incident was resolved by 6:01 AM.
* Earlier, at 3:39 AM, another structure fire (incident 2026078755) was reported in Silver Heights, in the St. James ward. Units D10, E19, E20, L11, and R11 responded, with the situation resolved by 3:51 AM.
It's a reminder of the vital work our WFPS crews do, often when the rest of the city is sleeping, hey. We'll be keeping an eye out for official releases from the WFPS media office regarding these incidents later today.
### What Else is Happening Around Town
On the business front, our monitor shows a bit of a mixed bag. William Whyte has seen five businesses close in the past month, part of 30 total closures across the city, with Spence and West Broadway also seeing notable numbers. Meanwhile, there are seven new liquor license applications posted this week, including for Charito Bakery and Berto’s Taqueria. Always something new on the horizon, isn't there?
Keep an ear to the ground, and stay safe out there.
