I'm seeing "Jess Hilarious" trending, and it brings a smile to my face. A woman, unapologetically herself, making people laugh. She’s built a career on her perspective, her voice. And it makes me think about how many women, especially women of color, spend so much of their lives shaping themselves to fit into spaces that were never built for them.
We learn early how to perform. How to dim our light just enough so others aren't uncomfortable. How to carry the weight of expectation, not just for ourselves, but for all who look like us. I've read the bio, and it is impressive. But I'm here to honor the woman who had to survive the chapters that didn't make the press release. The ones where she had to laugh to keep from crying, or strategize just to be heard.
There’s a freedom in realizing you don't have to carry it all anymore. You don't have to be "fine." We don't do "fine" in this corner. We do honest. And the honesty is that it was a heavy lift. So, sis, take a breath. You are safe to be human here.
